In Focus is a new column featuring short Q&As with LMA West Region members.

In our latest issue, we introduce you to long-time legal marketer Audrey Miller at Calibrate Strategies, who holds her lovely daughter Claire (left).

How did you get started in Legal Marketing?
After graduating from the University of Iowa with degrees in both Journalism and Graphic Design, I knew I wanted to explore career opportunities within marketing or advertising. I stumbled upon a posting as a marketing and business development coordinator at Dorsey & Whitney in Minneapolis, interviewed with LMA’s very own Adam Severson, and the rest is history.

What is your favorite part of your job?
Serving as a partner and strategic advisor. Prior to joining Calibrate Legal as a marketing operations consultant, I spent over a decade in various marketing and business development roles at law firms. Throughout my career, I’ve met projects and people with a deep level of curiosity which has led me to uncover opportunities and connect dots I would’ve otherwise missed. I thrive on helping attorneys and business service professionals succeed.

What is a challenge you have been able to overcome in your career/current job/legal marketing?
Early on in my career, I defaulted to always responding with “yes.” When I started asking qualifying questions to obtain a better understanding of a project and the objective, I became empowered to propose alternative solutions to achieve a better result. With this shift, I quickly earned credibility and respect which enabled me to become a more effective legal marketing professional.

Tell us one thing people do not know about you.
As a relatively young business development coordinator at Latham & Watkins, I was seconded to Singapore for five weeks to help my colleagues who were short-staffed. It was among the most profound professional and personal experiences of my life. Not only did I meet a colleague who has become one of my dearest friends, but it also led to a promotion at Latham that involved relocating from Chicago to Los Angeles. This secondment gave me the confidence I needed to succeed in that role and those that followed.

Share something you have found to be interesting or special in the last year.
Easy! My daughter, Claire. As a new mom in the midst of a pandemic, I was blown away by the support my husband and I received from family, friends, and colleagues across the country. While we weren’t able to celebrate the arrival of our daughter with loved ones in the way that we had envisioned, we were so thankful for technology and the ability to remain connected (thank you Zoom and FaceTime!). And truth be told, my husband and I were quite happy not to have to share too many baby snuggles!
