LMA Southeast Presents: PR Crisis Live: Managing a Media Disaster
Three Experts Discuss and Debate the Horrifying Barber Ranen Emails
This led to the public humiliation and swift downfall of the prominent name partners. Within days, the spinoff was renamed and the lawyers are digging out from beneath the debacle. This is an extreme example of an all-too-common occurrence ― bruised egos and conflicting marketing agendas when lawyers quit their firms. It also raises tangential issues of ethics, leadership, and risk.
The media thrive on embarrassing stories of high-powered hubris. But these wounds were self-inflicted, and no one wins a media mud-slinging contest. Marketers ― we could have prevented this.
Three renowned veterans of marketing, PR, and crisis management will analyze this ugly mess. We will debate the two firms’ approaches before and after the distressing disclosures; discuss general public relations, crisis, and branding issues; and detail precisely how you can help your firm strategically manage the interpersonal and media-related issues of lawyers joining or leaving your firm. Don’t miss this one!

Our Local Steering Committees (LSCs) are the lifeblood of LMA. We invite you to meet a few of our LSC leaders and learn how they discovered our profession, what they love most about it and a bit more about them outside of the office.
How did you get into legal marketing? One of my high school acquaintances was a patent paralegal at an intellectual property law firm in Minneapolis (where I’m originally from). She recommended me for an available marketing assistant role, so I took the leap into legal marketing and haven’t looked back!
What do you like most about legal marketing? I like that every day is different! The variety of people and projects makes my position interesting.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I like reading, doing beach days, and trying out new restaurants. My fiancé also works in accounting at Disney, so we are trying to explore the theme parks in Orlando more!
What are you watching, listening to or reading right now? I am always listening to the podcast, How I Built This. It’s fascinating to listen to founders of really big and recognized brands do a deep dive into how they started.
How did you get into legal marketing? I started at my previous firm as the receptionist and worked closely with the Marketing team with meetings, lunches, etc. I really wanted to work my way into our team there, and reached out and talked about what I needed to do to achieve this. I applied for a position and didn’t get it but I didn’t give up. I applied for the next available position and ended up moving into that role.
What do you like most about legal marketing? I love being able to help attorneys' visions come to life, whether that be an event, PowerPoint presentation, etc.
What is your biggest professional goal this year? I would love to just continue to grow my skills and my knowledge of the legal marketing field.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I enjoy spending time with my husband our 5 animals (yes, we’re crazy! – 3 dogs and 2 cats), traveling, and attending concerts.
What are you watching, listening to or reading right now? I’m always staying up to date on the latest Crime Junkies podcast episode. I also am watching Blue Bloods with my husband from the beginning, as well as Suits on my own!
How did you get into legal marketing? I started my career in the fashion industry, interning at the Coach Headquarters in New York City and then working for the Home Shopping Network in St. Pete. I think it is safe to say I did not think I would end up in legal marketing but my mom, who is in the HR department at GrayRobinson, informed me of the job and the rest is history!
What do you like most about legal marketing? I enjoy the amalgamation of the buttoned-up legal industry with the more creative marketing side.
What’s your biggest professional goal this year? To move into a manager role.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I love making art, reading, working out, going for nature walks, and spending time with my friends and family. I am also currently learning how to play guitar!
What are you watching, listening to or reading right now?
I am currently reading The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah and my guilty TV pleasure is Love Island UK.
How did you get into legal marketing? I got into legal marketing by accident like a lot of people. While looking for marketing opportunities fresh out of college, I joined the industry not knowing much about it and jumped into LMA as well. I have been in legal marketing since!
What do you like most about legal marketing? My favorite part about legal marketing is the dynamic work and how each day is different. I enjoy the opportunities to dive into challenges and learn new things.
What’s your biggest professional goal this year? One of my professional goals this year has been to better utilize LinkedIn, both by being more active myself and by seeking out connections and content from thought leaders I might not encounter in person.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I love spending time biking, reading, and doing yoga to relax. I also enjoy trips to the beach, surfing, and traveling as much as I can!
What are you watching, listening to or reading right now? I’m currently reading both The Marriage Portrait, a historical fiction novel, and People We Meet on Vacation, a contemporary romance novel. I highly recommend both authors of these books and have enjoyed their other works as well.
