I learned today that Lou Duffy, Sr. VP Retired of Martindale Hubbell has died, and I am very sad. For many of you this won't be noteworthy, but for all of us who have grown some grey hair, we know we have truly lost a good friend. There was a time when Lou knew everyone in the industry and everyone knew Lou. What you might not have known that Lou, one of the humblest people I have ever known, was also know around the world. I don't throw that sentence out lightly. Lou was an active supporter of human rights globally, active in the International Bar Association and the only non-lawyer to ever be recognized by the ABA for his contribution to human rights and world peace.
Lou spent his entire career at Martindale/LexisNexis. There are even some who say he was there to meet the original Mr. Martindale. Lou was an avid and consistent supporter of LMA. He was at many of our earlier conferences and will be remembered not only for kindness to all and keen sense of humor, but for his ability to sense what you needed and be the first in line to offer support. I, like many of my colleagues, was fortunate to have had Lou as a mentor.
Bernard of Chartes said that "we are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, so that we can see more than they". Lou lent me his shoulders and I am a better professional for it. Please join me in raising a glass virtually to Lou Duffy. He was a true gentle man and I for one will miss him dearly. Thank you Lou.
