What skills do you think it takes to be a successful legal marketer?

What do you do for Goodwin Procter?
As Marketing Specialist for the firm's Los Angeles offices, I provide marketing, public relations, and events/project management in support of the firm's client relations and business development efforts. Additionally, I work closely with the Los Angeles Chair on personal and overall marketing and public relations initiatives for the Los Angeles Real Estate practice.
What aspects of your job do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy wearing the many "hats" that come with my position. Every day is different, every project is different and I'm constantly challenged to come up with new ways to look at the same thing or to develop creative approaches and strategies to successfully execute new ideas. I am quick to jump on any opportunity that allows for creativity. With the collaboration of our Los Angeles Office Chair, the creation and coordination of an ongoing series of marketing and business development workshops aimed at helping our attorneys learn the marketing skills that aren't taught in law school has been one of my favorite ongoing projects. It's always a great feeling when I see the attorneys implementing something they learned from one of the workshops into their daily practice and seeing the business development benefits and rewards of their efforts for themselves.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Over the last year in particular, I have learned the importance of work-life balance. Though it's certainly not an easy balance to maintain, I do my best to make free time to work out, hike with my dog, "Monster," spend time with my boyfriend, and do what I do best...fill my closet with new clothes!
Have there been any business books that have helped you with your job?
I really enjoy reading various white pages and blogs related to marketing and public relations. Gaining insight from other professionals in the industry is invaluable and often sparks new ideas or strategies that I try to implement within my marketing efforts. I also highly recommend "Business Development for Lawyers: Strategies for Getting and Keeping Clients," by Sally J. Schmidt. It's a great, practical guide to some of the fundamental strategies of marketing and business development in the legal industry. I find myself referring to it time and again for personal reference and also as a resource for attorneys looking to improve their personal marketing skills.
What do you like most about working for Goodwin Procter?
I have grown tremendously both personally and professionally while working at Goodwin Procter; particularly over the last year. It has been, and continues to be a rewarding learning experience on many levels. I am lucky to work in an environment and with people that encourage me to think outside of the box and try new things and who give me the freedom to be creative and independent. They allow me to stand on my own, but stand behind me as support, offering guidance, and showing their appreciation for my efforts.
It's been exciting to be a part of the firm's expansion and growth in California. Goodwin Procter is an innovative firm filled with tenacious and dynamic people who, through a collective spirit, are committed to the success of our clients. Working alongside like-minded people, dedicated to producing outstanding and often groundbreaking work, makes me proud to be a part of the team.
