DIRECTOR OF MARKETING - NUTTER McCLENNEN & FISH LLP (Boston)

Summary of Position:

The Director of Marketing will strategically direct the marketing function in direct support of the firm’s strategic plan and business development goals.  The Director will evaluate, develop and implement the firm’s ongoing marketing programs and initiatives and be responsible for developing a high level of service in support of these initiatives.  The Director will be responsible for developing and managing the firm’s marketing budget and assisting the Department Chairs, Practice Group Chairs and the Director of Business Development with developing practice-specific budgets as the need arises. The Director will have overall responsibility for the following activities: 

  • Firm brand management and design standards
  • Public relations
  • Publishing - electronic and print
  • Website content and CMS functionality
  • Social media and blogs
  • Advertising
  • Sponsorships
  • Conference/event promotion
  • Law firm and attorney rankings and surveys
  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system
  • Marketing analytics
  • Practice Group, Department and individual attorney marketing support 

Education:

Undergraduate degree required; an MBA or equivalent preferred but not required. 

Experience:

15+ years of solid business experience at progressing levels throughout career.  Experience in a services environment, preferably professional services, is highly desirable.  Experience should be in a leadership role in marketing.  

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Director of Marketing will supervise other exempt marketing/communications professionals and non-exempt support staff. 

Firm Relationships:

Success in the Marketing function requires dynamic relationships with the firm’s management team and partners in leadership roles including, but not limited to, the firm’s Managing Partner, Business Development Committee Chair and Members, Executive Director, Director of Business Development, Department Chairs and Practice Group Leaders.  Additionally, a thorough understanding and solid working relationship with the firm’s other functional areas is critical, particularly Attorney Recruitment, Professional Development, Information Technology, Client Intake, Finance, and Library Services.

The successful candidate will be a strong leader with impeccable standards who is an agent for innovation and change.  The ability to build strong relationships and develop credibility quickly is critical.  Additionally, effectively communicating initiatives, ideas and strategy up to partners and firm management will be key to both a successful transition and setting the foundation for a transformed function. 

Reporting Relationship:

The Director of Marketing will report to the Executive Director and work in close collaboration with the Director of Business Development to drive the business development and awareness goals and strategies at the firm.

Physical Environment and Working Conditions

  • Work frequently requires more than 40 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position. 
  • Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.
