Title: Vice President – Marketing, Sales and Media Relations

Firm: Curtis Visual Communications

Education: JD, University of Toledo College of Law; BA Philosophy, University of Cincinnati

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio – I’ve lived in Toledo, Columbus, and Denver Colorado. I currently live in Cincinnati

What was your first job? My first job was with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield – marketing and sales role. I came up through the ranks there and when I left there I was the VP of Marketing and Sales – Western Region

What would you be doing if you weren't in your current job? I would teach law.
What is currently on your iPod? Lou Reed – Into the Divine, Radiohead – Where I end and you begin (all of their material), Beatles – every release they’ve recorded, Andrea Bocelli – all Italian songs.

Where is your favorite place to go to relax? Kenwood Country Club – I’m an avid golfer and can’t think of a better place to be than on a golf course.

What is your favorite TV show? Favorite movie? Favorite TV show – Modern Family; favorite movie – The Godfather

What is your favorite cuisine? Italian – see above on the Godfather. I’ve studied Italian for 6 years and have real passion for the Italian culture/cuisine.

If you were stranded on a desert island, who or what would you want to have with you? Whom? No answer. What? – my Ipod – I love music

Who are the most important people in your life? My children (three daughters – twins who are 18 and a 15 year-old). Dr. Rollin Workman – I was his teaching assistant in the Philosophy department at UC. My mother and father.

What is the first thing you read in the morning? I study Italian every morning for an hour or so.

How did you get into legal marketing? I’ve always been in marketing roles on the business side. I ran sales and marketing for Anthem and Luxottica/EyeMed. Both were Fortune 500 companies. I decided to go to work for a boutique marketing firm in Cincinnati in favor of working for another large corporation. I focused on legal marketing because as an attorney and a marketer, I felt like I could leverage my background and really help law firms tell their story more effectively. Social media, web design, video – all are important tools in telling the story...

What is the best thing about your job? I love to write and I love to carefully listen to the business issues/communication/legal issues that our clients face. Then, my role is to creatively solve. That’s very gratifying. We are more than communicators – we help solve problems through the creative use of various communication tools. What could be better?

What advice would you offer a new entrant to the world of legal marketing? Ask questions and be humble. When we presume to know all the answers – we are done. Nothing can replace the sincere curiosity you must “show up” demonstrating. You cannot solve without first understanding.
