Whelan.jpgTitle: Marketing Manager

Firm: Graydon Head & Ritchey LLP

Education: BA, Xavier University

Where did you grow up? Kettering, Ohio

What was your first job? Bagging groceries at the local supermarket was my first paycheck — but I was getting way underpaid odd jobs in my neighborhood (mowing the lawn, shoveling snow) long before that.

What would you be doing if you weren't in your current job? A similar role with a marketing/business development culture that values cultivating and retaining relationships.

What is currently on your iPod? It is a very eclectic mix — Sinatra and other classic crooners, Irish folk music, country and a mix of 90s music that is so bad, it’s good.

Where is your favorite place to go to relax? Golf course — when playing well, that is (which is rare nowadays).

What is your favorite TV show? Favorite movie? TV Show — Mad Men. Movie — I have to go old school: tie between Hoosiers and The Sandlot.

What is your favorite cuisine? Hard to go wrong with good ol’ American BBQ.

If you were stranded on a desert island, who or what would you want to have with you? A sand wedge and a bag of balls — lots of time and lots of sand to work on my short game.

Who are the most important people in your life? My bride, Sarah, and our three boys, Justin, Tommy and Charlie.

What is the first thing you read in the morning? My phone; email, weather, traffic — then normally Twitter.

How did you get into legal marketing? Luck or accident — depends on the day. Seriously though, a friend of a senior partner recommended me to a legal marketing role, and 10 years later I’m still enjoying the ride.

What is the best thing about your job? The people. I know it is a cliché, but we have great people at Graydon. I enjoy working our attorneys and development team to scheme up creative ways to differentiate our firm and our people in an exceedingly competitive marketplace.

What advice would you offer a new entrant to the world of legal marketing? I don’t believe it is much different than any other field, but I do believe it is vital – communication is key.
