Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes), one of Canada’s largest and most successful law firms, has an immediate opening for a Business Development Specialist to join our Client Relations and Marketing Team in Vancouver.
Reporting to the Director, Client Relations & Marketing, the Business Development Specialist will work closely with lawyers, and Client Relations & Marketing colleagues in Vancouver and across the Blakes offices internationally, to maximize the Vancouver office’s business development and marketing opportunities in one of Canada’s most dynamic markets.
Primary Responsibilities:
Primary responsibilities of the Business Development Specialist include, but are not limited to:
- Contributing to the development and execution of strategies, business plans and projects to expand existing client relationships and develop new business with existing and prospective client. Includes working with the Business Intelligence team in conducting and coordinating research in the evaluation of new business opportunities, cross-selling and client specific opportunities.
- Assist with assessing/recommending priorities for the business development/marketing budget; tracking budgets throughout the year and making recommendations to optimize limited resources.
- Under the direction of the Vancouver office’s Director, Client Relations & Marketing and/or the Firm’s Director, New Business Development & Proposals, develop responses to RFPs and pitch opportunities including developing the strategic approach, drawing on existing content and drafting original, customized content based on client needs; establishing and meeting deadlines for efficient on-time delivery of materials; and arranging for and executing debriefs.
- Leading practice submissions to approved ranking services and directories, initiating and coordinating input from lawyers, ensuring timely and robust submissions based on strategic direction of the Director and Firm Management. This includes maintaining databases of deal submissions, awards and rankings information.
- Evaluating, coordinating and delivering the regional sponsorship and community involvement initiatives, working with internal stakeholders to maximize the investment. This includes tracking lawyer speaking engagements and conference attendance and providing support as required to prepare for these engagements.
- Working with the Director to develop and deliver business development training to administrative staff as required. This will include their use and maintenance of InterAction (data entry, running routine reports, etc.), PowerPoint, lawyer profile updates, etc.
- Facilitating arrival/departure arrangements of lawyers by working with the relevant team members to post/delete profiles; ensuring InterAction contacts are being properly managed; updating marketing collateral accordingly, etc.
- Regularly communicate status of relevant business development initiatives across the Firm.
- Assisting the Director in developing processes and tools to more efficiently manage the business development/marketing initiatives, leveraging internal technology resources.
- Working with data stewards and administrative support staff in the maintenance of client data CRM databases.
- Working with administrative support staff to ensure lawyer profiles are up to date.
- The planning and logistical execution of client seminars and events. Activities include working with team members on logistics (venue, menus, travel, etc.); drafting invitations; testing and providing feedback on external communications; finalizing and ongoing management of distribution lists, including tracking RSVP’s, managing client questions and all event stakeholders updated on RSVP list(s); preparing name badges; obtaining, assembling and formatting PowerPoint presentations; onsite support (welcoming and providing general information to guests during the event); and where relevant, ensuring materials are posted on Blakes.com and relevant intranet sites following the event.
- Supporting other projects and/or initiatives as required.
As the role is part of a small team, the Business Development Specialist must have a can-do attitude and to be prepared to provide support for day-to-day business development/marketing queries and requests.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will:
- have a marketing or business degree or diploma, with 5-7 years business development and marketing experience in a professional services environment;
- have a thorough understanding of the Vancouver and BC business communities;
- have exemplary written and communication skills with the confidence and ability to communicate with stakeholders at different levels throughout the Firm;
- have strong and positive interpersonal skills combined with a commitment to excellence in client service for our internal and external clients;
- have the ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a professional manner often under tight timelines;
- be a highly motivated self-starter who shows initiative and is able to think strategically, work effectively and independently under limited supervision as well as within a team;
- have the proven ability to exercise sound judgement and solve problems – ability to approach problems proactively and present viable solutions or escalate issues as appropriate to the Director;
- have keen attention to detail with a commitment to ensuring the highest standards of accuracy and presentation;
- have an understanding of practice/industry/initiative group structures and operations; and
- possess an awareness and comprehension of the Firm's goals, culture and strategy.
The successful candidate will be proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint, MS Outlook and Excel. Experience with any of the following: SharePoint, InDesign, Illustrator considered a plus.

Salary Range: Competitive salary based on experience.
