Past President Compendium: Social Media

This quarter, we asked the members of the Midwest Region Past Leader Initiative to share with us some of the best things they’ve seen in the industry on social media. We chose four to share with you here!

  • I was a big fan of Lance Godard's @22Twts initiative on Twitter. Even though he no longer publishes his lawyer storytelling platform, it was interesting and creative. It gave lawyers a chance to come out of their shells and be, you know, human. For something that began back in 2010, it was pretty cutting-edge for its time. Kudos to Lance and let’s find what’s next. - Jeff Dennis, Kegler Brown
  • How about Bryan Wilson, the Texas Law Hawk? His social media approach is ... well ... ummm ... creative? He's on Twitter AND has his own YouTube channel. Check them out. Pretty sophisticated and innovative stuff, right? Seriously, know your audience and your objectives for social media. Then get creative. It's a simple formula, really: Strategize, execute, measure, adjust, repeat. - Jill Clark, Bricker & Eckler
  • For our firm’s 150th anniversary, we partnered with Faribault Mill to design a limited run of scarves and had a theme of “woven into the fabric of the community for 150 years.” We held a social media contest, “GPM Scarves Around Town,” and invited employees to submit photos of the GPM anniversary scarves on a client, public figure, local monument or celebrity. Employees could win up to $1,000 for their favorite charity and photos were posted and shared on Facebook, Twitter and the website. Our clients really engaged in the campaign. - Kelly Klopotek, Gray Plant Mooty
  • I attended a corporate counsel event where several local law firms were sponsors and had exhibit tables. One local firm had created a hashtag and agreed to make a donation of a certain amount for every Tweet referencing that hashtag.  I thought that was a very clever way to get people engaged with social media while also raising money for a worthwhile cause. - Maureen Farr, Stinson Leonard Street
