September 2016
President's Letter
Hope you all had a wonderful end of summer and are ready to kick off the fall! In this issue of the Nor'Easter, we take a look back and forward at LMANE happenings. As part of the LMA's transition into a regional structure, we are thrilled to congratulate four of our own LMANE members who were elected to leadership positions on the Northeast Regional Board:
President: Jennifer Johnson Scalzi, Founder, J. Johnson Executive Search, Inc.
President-elect: Liz Cerasuolo, Director of Communications, Fish & Richardson Immediate
Past President: Deborah Scaringi, Consultant, Scaringi Marketing
Director: Jenna MacNeill, Marketing Manager, Greenberg Traurig LLP
Thanks also to everyone who attended the 3rd Annual Future Leader's Boot Camp in July. We had a sold-out room packed with fresh faces and a group that was very interactive. Members of the LMANE Board of Directors and others presented on a range of new topics and we wrapped up with a fun networking game and reception with former LMANE Presidents. We could not have asked for a more beautiful night for our Summer Social at Sterling's and turnout was epic - we had over 100 attendees and fun was had by all. Thank you to our host J. Johnson Executive Search.
We have two exciting lunch programs coming up. The first, sponsored by Imarc, is on September 14 and will feature Beth Cuzzone, Director of Client Service and Business Development at Goulston & Storrs; and Andrew Murray-Brown, Senior Consultant at LawVision Group, who will present "Moving from Marketing to Business Development: Become Your Firm's Expert." Also "Save the Date" for our program on October 19, sponsored by Thomson Reuters, which will feature industry thought leader Tim Corcoran. Registration information for this program will be sent out in the next couple of weeks.
Also this fall, we will be hosting our annual LMA New England Regional Conference on November 14-15, "Law Firms of the Future: Navigating for Success," at the Hyatt in Boston. The event begins Thursday evening with Deb Knupp, Managing Partner, Akina, presenting on "Great Law: Leadership in Innovation for the Next Decade of Opportunity," followed by a Friday morning keynote panel on harnessing predictive analytics to drive client growth and retention, plus thought-provoking breakouts and Ted Talks. Announcing the 2016 New England Regional Conference Keynote Speaker: Deb Knupp, Managing Partner, Akina
The 2016 New England Regional Conference has announced its Conference Keynote Speaker, Deb Knupp, Managing Partner, Akina.
In keeping with the conference theme, Law Firms of the Future Navigating for Success¸ Deb Knupp will present Great Law: Leadership in Innovation for the Next Decade of Opportunity:
"It's time to change the conversation. In a sea of challenging headlines and dim predictions for the future of law - BigLaw, NicheLaw or NonLaw - it's time to start talking about GreatLaw. GreatLaw is the place where the most profitable clients want to buy, the most talented people want to work and the most inspired leaders want to serve a bigger purpose in their communities and families. Innovation is required to access GreatLaw. Innovation in leadership, client experience, business models, jobs and roles, technology and new products/services.
The innovation study - Law2023 - provides an exciting look into the future of law and highlights 7 design principles and marketing disciplines to remain relevant and accelerate revenue over the next decade. This session will share the Law2023 principles and will provide concrete insight and tactics for what clients are saying, what innovative law firms are doing and how legal marketers can become the innovation architects within their firms to:
- Retain and expand existing client business;
- Attract new client business, and;
- Build a marketplace brand fueled by innovation that increases firm profitability to deliver a triple bottom line."
The 2016 New England Regional Conference will be held November 14 and 15 at the Hyatt Regency, Boston, MA. Visit our conference website for more information, registration details and other updates in the coming weeks. Also, there are still some opportunities left to partner with LMA for this year's conference. Visit the Service Provider Partnership page for more information.

Future Leaders Boot Camp Recap
To beat the heat, members of LMA New England met for an afternoon program hosted at WilmerHale's Boston office evolving around this year's theme of "Communication, Collaboration and Credibility: Managing Your Personal Brand and Being an Ambassador for your Department." Insights, personal experiences, and an exchange of innovative strategies were presented during this three-part program. Topics and speakers included:
-
Collaboration: Understanding and Measuring ROI presented by Jenna MacNeill of Greenberg Traurig and Katie Rutter of Katie Rutter Consulting. Jenna and Katie discussed the economics of measuring ROI from both soft and hard opportunities, using data to make strategic decisions in formulating a budgeting game plan, and making educational evaluations based on new business opportunities including RFP's, events, advertising and thought leadership.
-
Gaining Credibility and Unleashing Your Inner Rock Star! presented by Joanne Thorud of Davis, Malm & D'Agostine, P.C. and Teresa McCahill of Latham Watkins. Joanne and Teresa presented ways to build confidence, prioritizing projects, making judgment calls, and showcasing your talent. Valuable tips were shared to increase your credibility at your firm and how to deal with matrix management when working with others on your team.
-
Storytelling: An Art with Unlimited Potential presented by Chris Newman of Cooley LLP and Cassie Bent of Goulston & Storrs. Chris and Cassie delved into the automatic habits that we as legal marketers commonly cave into while storytelling. They emphasized using a unique voice to differentiate your firm from others and seeing each story as a new opportunity while staying consistent to the brand. Cassie focused on building your personal brand using the art of storytelling. Key takeaway: your interactions contribute to your personal brand; be sure to be you!
The afternoon concluded with a round of Networking Bingo, the Past Presidents Networking Reception, and LMA New England's Annual Summer Social hosted at Sterling's.
