President’s Letter

As the snow continues to melt and days continue to lengthen, I am enthusiastic about the bright forecast ahead. March has been an exciting month for our Chapter, and we are just getting started!

Earlier this month we hosted our second lunch program of 2015, “Creating an Executive Newsroom to Generate New Business.” The room was packed as Christine Dunn offered practical tips for establishing an executive newsroom within your firm and leveraging it for thought leadership. Also, just last week we had a full house at the New England Chapter Your Honor Awards reception. LMA International President, Adam Severson, joined us as the guest emcee to celebrate our region’s most innovative legal marketing projects of 2014. Thank you to all of the firms who submitted a project for consideration this year. We received a record-breaking number of submissions, so continue the great work everyone! Check out the live tweets on Twitter or keep reading for a list of this year’s top award winners.

I am thrilled to announce a unique and unprecedented panel event on the horizon this spring. On May 13, LMA New England will partner with two other professional service associations (SMPS and APMP) for an Executive Panel Event connecting the legal, accounting and architecture/engineering/construction industries. Top executives from each industry will come together to compare notes and share ideas on retaining clients, growing market share and staying ahead of the curve in today’s competitive landscape. By learning how each industry approaches client relationships and business development, we hope to uncover new and innovative strategies for success. Click here to read more about the all-star panelists and register for the event.

I hope to see many of you in a couple of weeks at the Annual LMA Conference in sunny San Diego. If you are not able to attend the conference, be sure to follow live updates on social media using the hashtags #LMA15 and #lmamkt. And stay connected to LMA NE for details on a “Member Mixer” at the end of April and upcoming SIG events this spring.

Cheers,

Shelley Swanson

2015 LMA NE Chapter President

Best in Show

The judges had the option of choosing an entry to serve as Best in Show and they opted to do so this year. The entry they chose was impressive and comprehensive in showcasing Corporate Social Responsibility and community service. The firm provided exceptional rationale. The campaign had it all – social media, internal and external communications.  The K&L Gates marketing approach for this project is complex, comprehensive and consistent. The “Global Day of Service” entry incorporated multiple components and had many moving parts that had a clear beginning, middle and end. Throughout the project, the work product remained true to the K&L Gates brand. The judges are pleased to award the Best in Show award to K&L Gates for their ”Global Day of Service”

Congratulations to all of the winners, and thank you to our Event Chair, Jennifer Johnson Scalzi and her dedicated committee, Savannah Rose, Natacha Vautier and Allison Glenn. Visit the Your Honor Awards page on our website for complete results and snapshots of the winning work.

A panel of marketing and business development executives from each industry will discuss the trends, challenges and opportunities they face selling professional services. They will share best practices for retaining current clients, growing market share and staying ahead of the curve in today’s competitive and ever-changing environment.

Moderator:

  • Amy Fowler, Chief Marketing Officer, Mintz Levin

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) News

Future Leaders SIG

The Future Leaders SIG gathered in early March for its first meeting of the year. The group had the privilege of having Jennifer Johnson Scalzi stop by to speak about career development. The interactive session provided practical guidance to our next generation of leaders on steps to take to position themselves for successful careers. Many thanks to Jennifer for presenting to the group.

The Future Leaders SIG plans to meet in mid-to-late April to debrief about the national conference. Stay tuned for more details!

Small Firm SIG

The Small Firm SIG continues to provide support to the Solo-marketer or for those of us at Small Firms. In March more than 10 members of the group got together to talk about best practices for business development tracking. This luncheon allowed our members to share how small firms are coming up with creative solutions to analyze and track the data that is important to their practices. Continue to look for more information regarding upcoming programs. The Small Firm SIG is open to in-house professionals at firms with fewer than 100 lawyers. For more information, contact Katherine Scobbo or Willie Sleight.

Digital Marketing & Social Media SIG

SIG members should be on the look-out for an email with tips on live tweeting at the LMA Annual Conference. Also, stay tuned for details on the next brown bag lunch meeting in April. The meeting will cover popular social media tools as well as a recap from the LMA Annual Conference. To sign up to receive emails from the SIG, contact Kerry Pillion or Kati Enscoe.

The Digital Marketing & Social Media SIG is a resource for LMA members interested in using digital marketing and social media to enhance marketing and business development efforts. By sharing best practices, exchanging ideas and providing access to professional development, we help our LMA New England members drive change through the use of technology. Join our LinkedIn Group to keep up with hot topics, poll the group, and access resources.

Sponsor Spotlight

One of the newest supporters of the LMANE chapter is Boston Interactive, a digital marketing agency that combines custom online strategies with emerging technologies. For those of you not familiar with Boston Interactive’s services, they partner with legal firms to create digital experiences that not only define your brand, but create and foster client relationships. Boston Interactive understands how the digital landscape has changed legal marketing and works with their clients to bridge the gap that the change in technology has created in the market.

The chapter would like to express our gratitude to Boston Interactive for their support as a silver sponsor for 2015, as well as the exclusive sponsor of this year’s Your Honor Awards. Be sure to introduce yourself to the Boston Interactive team, including Chuck Murphy, Rebecca Marani, and Dana Clancy.
