October 2015 Luncheon Program
Using Technology Competence to Strengthen Client Service featuring Andrew Perlman, Dean of Suffolk University Law School
When: Tuesday, October 27, 2015 12:00-1:30 p.m.
Where: Suffolk University Law School Function Room, 1st Floor 120 Tremont Street Boston, MA 02108
Technological competence is increasingly essential. The ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct were recently amended to emphasize that a lawyer’s duty of competence includes the duty to keep abreast of relevant technology. Moreover, the proper use of technology tools and software can make legal services better, faster, and cheaper, while improving a law firm’s relationships with its clients.
During this luncheon program, Suffolk University Law School Dean Andrew Perlman will provide an overview of the interrelationship of technology, client service, and the business of legal practice. You will learn how lawyers can leverage technology to more effectively meet client needs and demands. He will paint a picture of the evolving legal marketplace, offer a preview of where it may be going, and recommend how lawyers and law firms can more effectively compete for business in the 21st century.
Andrew Perlman is the dean and a professor of law at Suffolk University Law School in Boston. Andy is a nationally recognized voice on the future of legal education and law practice. He was the chief reporter of the American Bar Association’s Commission on Ethics 20/20, and in that capacity, he played a key role in drafting amendments to the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct that respond to changes in technology and increased globalization. More recently, he was appointed to serve as the vice chair of the ABA Commission on the Future of Legal Services, which is examining how to improve the delivery of, and the public’s access to, legal services. Andy also was the founding director of Suffolk’s Institute on Law Practice Technology and Innovation as well as the related Legal Technology and Innovation Concentration. In 2015, Andy was recognized as one of 50 "entrepreneurs, innovators, and trailblazers ... who have charted a new course for the delivery of legal services."
Andy has written numerous articles on professional responsibility that have appeared in some of the nation’s leading law reviews. He is a co-author (since 2008) of the annually updated book, Regulation of Lawyers: Statutes and Standards (with Stephen Gillers and Roy D. Simon) and a civil procedure casebook, Civil Procedure: A Coursebook (with Professors Joseph W. Glannon and Peter Raven-Hansen) that has been adopted at more than 70 law schools. Andy regularly speaks about professional responsibility and the future of legal services at academic conferences, bar association programs, and local and international law firms.
Prior to entering academia, Andy clerked for a federal district court judge in Chicago and practiced as a litigator there. He is an honors graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law School, and he received his LL.M from Columbia Law School.
