President’s Letter
This spring has been an exciting season for LMA New England. Just a few weeks ago, our chapter partnered with the Society of Marketing Professional Services and the Association of Proposal Management Professionals for an unprecedented cross-industry panel discussion. Nearly 150 people gathered to hear from top marketing executives at Ernst & Young, Skanska USA, GEI Consultants, K&L Gates and Mintz Levin. Panelists compared how the various industries are approaching new business opportunities, what forces are driving their markets today and which marketing strategies are proving to be the most effective. Keep reading for a recap and photos from the event.
This Thursday, June 4th, we are thrilled to have Deborah Knupp from Akina presenting on the topic of “Win with Wisdom Selling.” For anyone who has not heard Deb speak, this is one presentation you do not want to miss! Deb is dynamic, engaging and full of wise ideas to elevate your firm’s business development efforts. Scroll down to read more and register for this program.
And mark your calendars for two upcoming events this July. The LMA NE Summer Social will be held on July 22nd at Morton's in the Seaport. And, back by popular demand, the LMA NE Board of Directors will host a 2nd Annual Boot Camp Program from 12:00-5:00 p.m. on July 22nd. Like last year, this is a free program available only to LMA members and space will be limited. Selling legal services is tricky when a client doesn't have a pressing legal issue or urgent legal problem to address. The pressure to sell can sometimes look like "solutions in search of a problem" instead of first learning about a client's vision or strategy and bigger picture before designing what is optimally needed.
Addressing a key trend in legal business development, this program is designed to help participants re-imagine the sales process as an act of "lawsulting" (business consulting and legal advising) by packaging and sharing critical insights, knowledge and wisdom to generate new business leads and motivate clients to take action.
Wisdom Selling gives lawyers and law firms a tangible way to accelerate revenue to build a sales pipeline and to develop authentic client relationships that out behave the competition.

May Program Recap: Executive Insights: Learning from the Leaders in Marketing & Business Development
On May 13th, LMA NE joined forces with the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS Boston) and the Association of Proposal Management Professionals (APMP) to host an evening event that boasted 150+ attendees, a top notch panel discussion and abundant networking. Hosted at the picturesque offices of Nutter, McLennan and Fish in the Seaport, our panel of marketing and business development leaders from the legal, accounting and architecture/engineering/construction industries gave us a unique and uncharted look at selling professional services from three different perspectives. The panel was moderated by Amy Fowler, Chief Marketing Officer, Mintz Levin; and panelists included: Jeffrey Berardi, Chief Marketing Officer, K&L Gates; Laura Onessimo, Vice President, SKANSKA USA Building, Inc.; Tom Shea, Director of Business Development, Ernst & Young; and Scott Wallington, Chief Development Officer, GEI Consultants, Inc.

Small Firm SIG News
The Small Firm Special Interest Group is for Solo Marketers or those of us at firms of less than 100 attorneys. We meet periodically throughout the year to discuss topics or hear presentations on issues unique to small firms. Because we’re each in similar positions, everyone walks away with new ideas and inspiration to take back to their firm. Meetings are typically held over a brown bag lunch at an office in downtown Boston.
Early in May about 10 members met to review some of the topics from LMA’s International Conference in San Diego, CA. This luncheon allowed our members who attended the conference the opportunity to share what they learned with those who couldn’t make the trip.
Contact Katherine Scobbo or Willie Sleight to be added to the Small Firm SIG mailing list. Continue to look for more information regarding upcoming programs this fall.
Digital Marketing and Social Media SIG News
The Digital Marketing & Social Media SIG is holding a Summer Book Club. This summer we’re reading The Art of Social Media by author, speaker, entrepreneur, and evangelist Guy Kawasaki. Want to join us? Just pick up a copy of the book, spend some leisurely hours reading it on the beach this summer, and come to our September meeting (date TBD) ready to discuss everything you’ve learned about social and digital media.
Also look out for details on our next lunch meeting, where we’ll discuss Hubspot, Marketo, and other marketing database tools. To sign up to receive emails from the SIG, contact Kati Enscoe or Kerry Pillion, or join our LinkedIn Group.
