Position Summary:

The Business Development Supervisor, based in Philadelphia, will take a direct role in the implementation of business development strategies for the State and Transactional Tax Groups and supporting other firmwide marketing and business development initiatives, as needed.  This will include working to expand business, improve profitability and increase the profile of the State and Transactional Tax Groups. This position is responsible for supervising various group profile-raising activities, as well as liaising with the lead partners in each practice group in regard to business development objectives. 

As a member of an energetic firmwide marketing team, this position is responsible for the coordination and execution of business development and cross-selling activities to expand legal services provided to Tax and other clients. This professional will work with other marketing and firm personnel to lead pitches and proposals, and drive event planning, research and analysis, marketing communications, and maintenance of State and Transactional Tax documents, reports and systems.  

The Business Development Supervisor will serve as a core part of the Business & Finance Business Development team, leading on sector specific initiatives and contributing to a number of shared projects, in addition to interacting with attorneys.   

Essential Functions:

  • Partnering with State Tax and Transactional Tax partners, other attorneys and BD Team to develop and support business development, marketing, and client relations’ efforts to grow revenue in new and existing clients.
  • Collaborating with firm resources to prepare market research and client analysis to identify industry trends and new business development opportunities; perform client analysis within their assigned area of responsibility to identify new business opportunities; find synergies with other firm practice areas; assist attorneys in pursuing leads.
  • Developing language and credentials for use in marketing materials, RFPs, and other pitch responses, including the collection and maintenance of case/matter information; draft and edit practice area descriptions and attorney biographies; identify and coordinate responses to requests for proposals and assist attorneys with presentation preparation by compiling information about representative work. 
  • Supporting and/or leading practice and firm marketing and public relations initiatives, including awards/directories submissions, with assistance from the marketing group.
  • Cataloging and assisting with thought leadership opportunities, including speaking engagements, industry conferences, and writing and blog postings—both for Reed Smith publications and externally with professional and trade organizations. 
  • Developing relationships with key attorneys and maintain a high level of interaction with them.
  • Collecting case/matter information and maintain databases.
  • Managing and effectively utilizing client information through the firm’s client relationship management (CRM) system; including maintenance of group mailing lists and tracking new business opportunities within the firm’s CRM.
  • Assisting in coordination and strategic planning related to local and national industry conferences, client seminars and targeted sponsorships including budgeting and tracking associated costs.
  • Monitor and report on return on investment.
  • Working as an active member of a team to ensure a quality professional product as well as the delivery of materials within established timeframes. 
  • Assisting practice group and BD team with special projects, as assigned.

Requirements:

Education

College degree in Marketing or a related field required.

Experience:

  • Four or more years of experience in a marketing/business development-related field required, including at least two years of demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Experience working as a marketing/business development professional for Big Four or other national accounting firms is a significant plus.
  • Previous b-to-b marketing or tax marketing experience a plus, as well as an interest in and ability to understand the legal business environment, including industry terminology.  
  • Must have demonstrated experience working independently as well as within cross-functional teams in a collaborative, professional environment.  

Skills:

Exceptionally strong organizational, project management and problem solving skills are required for this role. Demonstrated ability to operate at multiple operational levels (e.g., strategic, administrative) required.  Must possess high energy, maintain a persistent mind-set, enthusiasm, and be extremely goal-oriented. Must possess a professional business manner, and have the ability to identify, connect and build relationships. Demonstrated ability to succeed in a fast-paced environment with strong demand for rapid response rates. 

Must be detail oriented, proactive and self-directed with ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities under tight deadlines.  Sound professional judgment and a high degree of poise and professionalism when interacting with internal and external contacts. Demonstrated ability to establish effective firmwide working relationships with individuals at all levels. Must be able to react to difficult situations quickly, effectively and diplomatically.  

Superior presentation skills. Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong computer skills, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as willingness to learn database systems. 

Other:

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 No direct management responsibilities to start but the potential exists to manage a junior resource, or indirectly mentor other department resources.

Equipmentto be Used:

 Must be able to operate computer and other office machines such as fax, calculator, telephone, etc.

Typical Physical Demands: Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office equipment such as computers, fax machines, calculators, telephones, etc.

Typical Mental Demands: Requires the ability to multi-task and handle projects from various individuals.  Must also address diverse issues on a daily basis.  Must be able to handle stressful situations and interact with various personalities at all levels in the Firm.  Must be able to make judgment decisions and adapt to changing work situations.  Must be able to grasp and apply new ideas.  Must be able to cooperate and work well with the others in the pursuit of team goals, shares information and supports others in helping to develop business.

WorkingConditions:

 Sometimes called upon to work in excess of 40 hours per week.  Works in a typical office setting. Limited travel may be required.
