Job Description Summary: The Manager, Business and Client Development for the Boston office will assist the Head of Business and Client Development with and manage the acquisition and expansion of the firm’s relationships with strategic client accounts, including clients in strategic industry segments, emerging cross-practice clients, and clients with high-value and high-stability spend. 

The Manager, Business and Client Development for the Boston office will assist the Head of Business and Client Development with and manage the acquisition and expansion of the firm’s relationships with strategic client accounts, including clients in strategic industry segments, emerging cross-practice clients, and clients with high-value and high-stability spend.  The position oversees the Boston office’s business development initiatives by managing and implementing projects from conception to execution and follow-through.

Working alongside peers as well as stakeholders the Manager, Business and Client Development will identify client accounts that represent significant potential for cross-practice growth.  He/she will then work with key stakeholders to achieve growth goals and assigned strategic account objectives.  The Manager, Business and Client Development represents the entire range of firm products and services to assigned clients.  

The Manager, Business and Client Development will also assist with the planning, implementation, measurement and performance management for front-line business development programs, lead qualification and nurture through owned and third-party events, and coordination of Business and Client Development activities with channel and alliance marketing efforts.

Job Description

Account planning and management:  

  • Under the direction of the Head of Business and Client Development, identify potential strategic accounts, formulate a growth plan for each account, and monitor and measure performance.
  • Client and prospect pipeline management, including tracking and reporting on the acquisition and growth of large multi-practice clients.

Business development strategy implementation

  • In collaboration with Strategy Office team and with Boston-based partners, implement BD initiatives designed to identify, target, acquire and grow strategic accounts.
  • For clarity, this is not a marketing role.  Experience with content creation, communications, branding or brand management, event planning, ranking submissions, etc. are not required for this role.

Specific Requirements

  • A minimum of six (6) years of directly relevant experience in successful business development  role(s) with increasing responsibility, preferably in a large national or international law firm environment, or similar professional services entities.
  • This position requires a Bachelor’s degree.  J.D. or M.B.A. is a plus, but not required
  • Understanding of the legal industry - market opportunities, competition, service offerings and competitive advantages. Familiarity with Labor & Employment practice specialties is desired, but not required.
  • Understanding of account-level financials, particularly measurements of profitable growth.
  • Experience leveraging marketing technology and business applications to generate, capture, and maximize critical thinking across buy cycle and account lifecycle  (including but not limited to CRM solutions, CMS and web analytics, win/loss analyses, and account and segment-level growth and profitability performance from proprietary databases, third-party BI solutions, or Excel-based reporting). 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing, on a prepared and extemporaneous basis.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and maintain a productive and committed work effort, meeting deadlines and managing workload.
  • Ability to work with others effectively in a team or cooperative environment to complete projects and to reach established goals and objectives in a timely manner.
  • A hands-on self-starter with the desire, drive, and ability to establish and maintain credibility among the firm's partners, officers and other decision makers.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret information from a variety of sources, apply critical and creative thinking to draw conclusions or develop solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to provide quality client service regarding matters of a complex nature. Requires patience, creativity and discretion.
  • Ability to effectively supervise others, including training, assigning work, and managing performance.
