Ballard Spahr LLP, a national law firm with more than 500 lawyers in 14 offices across the United States is seeking a Legal Project Manager to be responsible for helping to develop, implement and drive Legal Project Management (LPM) and Legal Process Improvement (LPI) efforts across the firm. This position can be located in any of our east coast offices.
The Legal Project Manager will act as a resource to attorneys by providing client and matter specific guidance. The purpose of this role is to help increase revenue, improve profitability, and provide exceptional client service on our most complex matters through more effective legal project management. This role will provide support in developing and utilizing practice area specific budgets, matter work plans, project plans, process maps and task codes, as well as support the development of knowledge in the LPM/LPI discipline to assist in building a repository of exemplars and templates. Additionally, the Legal Project Manager will work to develop, implement and manage LPM/LPI training, tools and technologies, as well as to think strategically about ways to further the disseminations of LPM/LPI as a best practice.
As the firm begins to adopt LPM/LPI more and more, the Legal Project Manager can expect to provide guidance on best practices, tools, techniques, roles and responsibilities. He or she will work with attorneys to respond to client RFPs, pitches and requests for LPM/LPI support and training as well as draft and submit budget proposals (including detailed scope of work and assumptions) and staffing plans, and, over the course of the matter, provide monitoring and support, and recommend changes, where necessary.
The ideal candidate will be a proactive, self-starter who has the ability to develop and cultivate strong attorney and client relationships; understands the details and can integrate them into a larger strategic context; has strong quantitative skills with an understanding of set theory and logic; is analytical and detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills and a team player, who prefers to work in a collaborative environment. Must also be able to manage multiple deadlines and priorities and effectively handle pressure.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Power Point and Word is required. Experience with Microsoft Access (or other relational databases) and/or OLAP technology is strongly preferred.
Selected applicants will have a bachelor's degree (J.D. or advanced degree a plus); a minimum of 2- 5 years of experience as a Legal Project Manager or equivalent position, preferably in a professional services environment and will have strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
Prior experience budgeting, monitoring and managing matters and coaching team members; financial acumen and/or understanding of law firm metrics and working or leading teams and conducting training is required.
Candidates must be willing to accept responsibilities that may demand a commitment of more than 40 hours per week, particularly in peak seasons.
