BOOK REVIEW-"The Power of Presence: Unlock Your Potential to Influence and Engage Others"

Some people have an amazing charisma that helps them inspire, influence, and lead others. That's the power of presence. Maybe some are born with it, but it can certainly be learned and this book focuses on developing the skills and confidence needed to create a more powerful presence to become a better manager, leader, and communicator.

Kristi Hedges is a leadership coach and she speaks to the reader as a coach would. The book is supported by an impressive amount of research, case studies and a sometimes self-deprecating humor when relating how she learned from past mistakes.

The book has a logical structure, and is presented in what is almost a workbook style with practical tools and exercises throughout-encouraging the reader to take action immediately-and key takeaways at the end of each chapter. Exercises range from mentally preparing for daily meetings and interactions with co-workers to advice for making better presentations and preparing for job interviews.

Key Points:

  • Self awareness and goal development lead to intentional changes.
  • Focused listening leads to better understanding of issues and better relationships.
  • Inspiring others requires credibility, vision and effective communication.
  • Leaders are change agents.
What I really appreciate is that the book applies to people at all levels of experience, from entry level managers, to entrepreneurs and Fortune 500 CEOs. Everyone can improve their presence and Hedges helps you assess your own personal areas of opportunity and start making changes immediately.
