How Did You Spend Your Summer?

By Diana Courson posted 07-01-2011 17:45

Books, vacations, back-burnered projects...  What have our fellow LMA Capital Chapter members been up to this summer?  I took to the (virtual) streets to find out!

How are you spending your summer?
Recovering from a radial fracture

Are you tackling any big projects this summer?
Tons of post wedding "to dos" - biggest one, changing my name!

What is your Favorite Summer Activity?
My usual summer includes a good number of weekend trips to visit my father in Lake Placid, NY, where relaxing on the dock, playing golf and going out to dinner are the day's big highlights.  Unfortunately, this summer I've had to scale trips back because of the Big Project that is taking up some good amount of time ... (The Big Project - Working with my bride-to-be on planning our November wedding in Anguilla!)

Did you take a vacation or have plans to take one?
We're road-tripping from DC to Chicago and Wisconsin with our three kids (5, 2, and 1).  I'm not sure why...  People say, "It will be fun!"  I say, "it's going to be a disaster, but we're doing it."

Did you read a great book this summer?  Why did you like it?
Jewish Wisdom by Joseph Telushkin.  With 5,000+ years of history, there comes wisdom.  (And I thought it couldn't hurt to get me some of that.)

Laurie Paul, Steptoe & Johnson

What is your favorite summer activity?
One of two things: outdoor movies/concerts or evening/late night walks around the Mall and monuments.  I love seeing everyone outside enjoying a nice summer night and once the sun goes down, it's actually tolerable to be outside in DC!

Did you take a vacation or have plans to take one?
My big summer plan was to get married and go on our honeymoon to Africa! Seeing the animals up close in their natural habitat was amazing. My favorite part of the safari was seeing the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti.  1.5 million wildebeest all migrate from the western part of the park to the northern part in Kenya during the dry season and it was a site like nothing I've seen before.

Did you tackle any projects you have been "meaning to get to" either at home or work?
We are growing a garden for the first time - so far we've had a lot of green beans and we're about to have bell peppers and cucumbers.  Who knew I'd be into gardening?!?!

Did you read a great book this summer?
Just finished Eighteen Acres by Nicolle Wallace which is an easy beach read about the White House and now reading Anthill: A Novel by Edward O Wilson which reminds me of Huck Finn.

Did you tackle any projects you have been "meaning to get to" either at home or work?
Yes, I am always tackling some project.  At home - organizing and cleaning is a never-ending battle so I decided this summer my new "hobby" would be to become one of those super neat freaks; my cats seem to be enjoying this new hobby but my husband not so much.  At work - we are moving in January,  so each day I decide to throw something out that I know I don't want to take with me to the new office.

What is your favorite summer activity?
Going to the pool; cooking out; eating ice cream on the front steps with my children.

What are you most looking forward to this fall?
No humidity. Playing golf again after recovering from shoulder surgery.
