Patio Season

Almost everywhere you look, pedestrians are sharing the sidewalks with tables for the summer. Here’s a rundown of options for dining al fresco…

Brunch and sunshine – Wake up a little earlier on the weekends for brunch before running errands in Lincoln Park. Conveniently surrounded by many big-box stores (and across from Whole Foods), Kingsbury Street Café has an outdoor patio and better-than-average breakfast fare. Whether you occasionally eat healthy or are a devout vegetarian, it’s easy to eat well here given the creative entrees made from fresh ingredients. The (very popular) lemon pancakes and breakfast chilaquiles won’t disappoint.

Smores at Homestead.jpgRomantic rooftop – A rooftop that takes reservations is a rare find and something I really appreciate, especially with a larger group. Homestead’s rooftop has a rustic-chic feel that’s perfect for a night out in Ukrainian Village. For starters, I recommend the house-baked breads, chicken skins and one of their seasonal salads, made from ingredients grown in the garden next to your table. The medium and large plates are inconsistently sized, so you’re better off sharing than ordering individual plates. For dessert, the s’mores (pictured) and beignets are FANTASTIC.

Cozy courtyard Stella Barra’s secluded courtyard is a great way to enjoy a warm evening without the noise or chaos of some of the more popular gardens. Try the unique Fresh Burrata to start and the fine chopped salad or brussel sprouts if you’re looking to add some vegetables. The White Bloomsdale spinach pizza with purple kale is highly recommended.

Back patio – This hidden neighborhood gem feels worlds away from bustling Clark street. Order a savory or sweet crepe (I recommend sweet) at La Creperie and enjoy a night at a French café. Half price wine on Tuesdays doesn’t hurt either. It’s great for those looking for a retreat from shopping on Diversey or a pre-theater dinner before catching a summer movie across the street.

Pre-theater sidewalk eats – Whether you’re headed to the Mercury Theater or just cruising South Port, Deleece’s patio is a great place to find yourself for dinner. The menu offers classic dishes and enough options that if you’re with a group, everyone is sure to find something they can enjoy. Crowd pleasing examples include the roasted pear and gouda tart, and Deleece’s signature salmon.

People watching on Milwaukee is much better with a taco in hand. Especially when it’s from Antique Taco. Unusual offerings like Market Mushroom or Garlic Shrimp (with purple potato, black bean, edamame and crispy brussel sprouts) make this hipster spin on Mexican food perfect when you don’t want to sacrifice taste and quality for a speedy meal. Between the chili cheese curds, unique taco salad and rosemary margaritas, you can’t go wrong.

Las Fuentes.jpgSometimes bigger isn’t betterLas Fuentes boasts a HUGE beer garden (see photo) but the food and service leave much to be desired. If you find yourself there, go ahead and enjoy a strawberry margarita, but I’d suggest Googling nearby restaurants while you sip.

What’s that? It’s raining? You’d rather sit inside?

Here are a few good finds for those who enjoy their air conditioning too…

Charming in Oak Park Hemmingway’s Bistro seems to transport you back in time, or at least slows things down, in a good way. There’s attention to detail and classic French dishes like mussels and herb-crusted fish make Hemmingway’s a great stop for a light lunch or dinner. The café is just a short walk from Scoville Park if you are still looking to enjoy the outdoors.

Bring the party Kinmont has opened in the former Zealous space to much fanfare and praise from Chicago foodies. While the food is very good, I think what will sustain Kinmont is the private dining options. Skylights let natural light into the back rooms and chalkboard walls allow for groups to customize their experiences. The fresh seafood is great, but don’t overlook the sides like charred carrots or smoked beets, which have significant flavor, too.

Delicious BBQ awaits at Lillie’s Q in Bucktown. The pulled chicken, mac n’ cheese, cornbread and shortbread dessert are all fantastic. There really isn’t a point in trying to narrow down any specific recommendations here, so go, enjoy and prepare to leave very full!
