- How did you get into legal marketing?
While working at Westlaw in 1999, I became intrigued at what one of their divisions was attempting to do with law firms in the area of Internet marketing. I started to read and learn all I could about the Internet as it related to law firms. The team I led at Westlaw was involved in a pilot or beta versions of products and services. We excelled in that arena and I was asked to lead a team for PA, NJ, NY, and DE for what later became a region and separate division of West, FindLaw.
- Describe one of your best experiences in legal marketing?
Simply put, my best experiences in legal marketing are when I get unsolicited feedback from my clients that they have retained paying clients as a result of me and my team’s hard work where their return on investment has exceeded their initial investment…and then some. Seriously, this excites me! When this happens, I feel that I have contributed to their practice beyond any contractual or business agreement.
- What is one of your greatest challenges when it comes to legal marketing?
One of my greatest challenges in legal marketing is setting and re-affirming realistic expectations of Internet marketing campaigns with attorneys who truly have no clue that they have no clue…and care not.
- Do you have any words of wisdom to those who are new to the field?
Be teachable, reachable, ethical, and set goals outside the job and make them a priority. Hug your family members and/or those very near and dear to you every day.
- What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
In 6th grade, I won “The Homemaking Award”. I was not aware that I would be receiving it at the time or in front of the whole school in the auditorium during our annual award ceremony! You see, I was actively involved in just about every sport possible back then, so you can only imagine the ridicule I received from the other boys! “Bake me some cookies, Greg!” “Fix the hole in my pants!” I still cook and sew (if I must) to this day…and proud of it!
