Brain Toys and Exercises: Effective Ways to
Energize Your Business Development Efforts

Wednesday, September 17, 2014
Registration & Breakfast: 8:00-8:30 AM
Program: 8:30-10:00 AM

Most lawyers spend their days competing - in the courtroom, drafting persuasive arguments, and at the negotiating table.  Yet, many are uncomfortable - or lack experience - when competing for new business.  How can we, as legal marketers, help our lawyers acquire the skills to be successful in business development?  How can we learn the best ways to provide the support they need?

Winston Churchill once remarked in a speech to the British House of Commons: "Personally, I am always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught."  In much the same way, lawyers generally are more receptive to learning new concepts when they are presented in an interesting and interactive manner.

Taught by Kevin McMurdo, former Chief Marketing Officer of Perkins Coie and currently Principle of McMurdo Consulting, this interactive program will offer a smorgasbord of ideas and activities designed to make business development training and learning programs both interesting and effective. Audience members should come prepared to “try out” some of these ideas and are encouraged to bring a few of their own.

The Takeaway:

Participants, at all levels, will learn:

  • New ways to engage attorneys when discussing business development
  • Best practices that have motivated new behavior and resulted in new work
  • Tactics for developing, and testing business development programs

The Speaker:

Kevin McMurdo, Principal, McMurdo Consulting

Kevin McMurdo is well-known to a number of law firm marketing and business development professionals.  His 27 years of experience includes in-house positions with three Pacific Northwest-based law firms and international accounting firms Coopers & Lybrand (both prior to and following its merger with Price Waterhouse) and Deloitte.

From 2002-2013 Kevin served as Chief Marketing Officer at Perkins Coie, a national law firm headquartered in Seattle.  Beginning in January Kevin launched McMurdo Consulting, which focuses on business development strategy, business development training and coaching, and presentation skills training and group retreats.

A graduate of Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College, Portland, he has been a member of the Oregon Bar since 1986.  Kevin lives on Vashon Island with his wife, Jenny, an accomplished equestrian and genealogist.  He is a committed distance runner (of the slow variety), and home brewer (Archie’s brew).
