Riccardo Encoteca (Lincoln Park) – A great place for a weeknight dinner when you want something more reliable than adventurous. In the warmer months, the busy sidewalk patio on Clark provides some good people watching, including the unbelievable amount of people waiting to get into Oven Grinders. The good news is you can enjoy your seat across the street knowing your dinner will be better and less touristy. In the cooler months, the inside has a cozy neighborhood feel. The basket of different breads pairs well with the roasted vegetable plate topped with smoked mozzarella and balsamic. As expected, the pizzas from the Tuscan wood burning oven are perfect with a glass of red on a fall evening. On a side note, Riccardo Enoteca is the wine bar associated with Riccardo Trattoria (Bib Gourmand from Michelin in 2011, 2012 and 2013) on the same block.
Beatrix (River North) – If I owned a restaurant and chose the menu, it would look a lot like the menu at Beatrix. I realize I am not alone with this thought though, especially when I see how many young professionals are dining there in the evenings. Healthy and light entree choices are very flavorful and indulgent desserts make it a great place to celebrate something special. The salads get extra credit for being more creative than usual, and the bakery counter offers great options for those who are on the go. Next time you are in line for a chocolate dipped angel food muffin, survey the open space. The versatile features of the open layout make it easy to envision hosting a variety of events here.
Mon Ami Gabi (Multiple Locations) – While I grew up not far from the Mon Ami Gabi in Oak Brook, it took a trip to Vegas before I tried this French-inspired restaurant. My experience was good, so a few weeks later I compared it to the Lincoln Park outpost. The popularity of both restaurants was apparent with long waits and tables close together. In both cases the food was better than I had expected. The entrees were classic without being boring and the service was noteworthy. In particular, our waiter in Chicago was an all-star. Mon Ami Gabi is good for business dinners when you want to play it safe on the food and entertain at a reasonable price point.
RM Champagne Salon (West Loop) – To say this is a hidden gem wouldn’t do it justice. And it’s not that hidden anymore because it’s such a great spot. In the summer the chic patio is the perfect mix of rustic and elegance, and in the winter, the romantic interior is perfect for a dinner of shared plates and dessert. The only thing on the menu I’d caution one not to order is the corn flavored ice cream, otherwise the vegetable ragout, the “classic” Alsatian flat bread with bacon and onions, and macaroni gratin were all standouts. Drinks are not cheap, but sometimes you have to pay for awesomeness.
Davanti Encoteca (Multiple Locations) – As the weather cools off, Davanti Encoteca is a perfect place to meet for a weekday lunch or dinner with friends (or a good place to take a break when your family visits and wants to shop the Magnificent Mile). The cozy atmosphere is casual and inviting. The menu doesn’t have many surprises, but the classic choices mean everyone will find something they like. The marinated olives and pizza della Terra with wild mushrooms, braised leeks and truffle oil were crowd pleasers.
Three Dots and A Dash (River North) – If you are trying to entertain a client who is nostalgic for the 1940’s and likes tropical drinks year-round, you are in luck. Basement tiki lounge Three Dots and a Dash is crowded and reminds us all that a little quirkiness in your life can’t hurt. While it isn’t ideal for a full dinner, the bar snacks are substantial enough to be served alongside strong cocktails (and, yes, these pool drinks are strong) in cool glasses. Thai Fried Chicken is the best choice on the menu, and our waitress encouraged us to skip the Luau Chips for the Tuna Crisp. We were not disappointed. I already liked Bub City, so the addition of a cool lounge below is just gravy.
