After an active spring, the Detroit City Group had a laid-back summer. Our primary activities were an enjoyable summer social held on July 11 at Bookie’s, a popular sports bar in downtown Detroit and a presentation on “ROI: The Only Technology Acronym That Matters,” held on June 19 at Bodman’s Detroit office. The group will reconvene on September 14 for a presentation on “Unpacking and Mapping Your Career Business Plan” to be held at the Troy, Michigan offices of Miller Canfield.
The outline for the September 14 program includes a number of topics that should be highly familiar to all legal marketers, including developing a resume, building new skills, growing a professional network, prioritizing activities and establishing a career plan. After reviewing the outline, my first thought was, “Hey, we should all be good at this. This is the stuff we address with our attorneys all the time!” While we do address these topics frequently, the outline made me realize that I rarely think about them in regard to my own career. Just like the lawyers I coach, I tend to focus on the crush of day-to-day deadlines and priorities, while ignoring the long-term plan. I look forward to joining my City Group colleagues as we gain a new perspective by applying these principles ourselves as legal marketers.
