LMA New England Nor'Easter Newsletter - May Edition

President’s Letter

With everything coming to life now that the winter thaw has melted away, it’s the perfect time to reveal our newly branded Nor’easter newsletter. Led by our communications committee and Clockwork Design Group, we created a design and name for the bi-monthly publication that is fun, creative, New England flavored and in line with the LMA brand. After considering 15 different options, Nor’easter was hands down the crowd favorite. Thank you to everyone involved with bringing this idea to life.

Keeping with the theme of introducing new offerings and building off of our momentum with unveiling our revamped Facebook page in March, we recently launched Instagram and Pinterest pages, making us the first LMA chapter to connect with our members through these platforms.  Pictures are such a fun way to get to know each other and stay involved with the social and educational components of our chapter. What better vehicles to get these benefits.  Content building is already well underway with some helpful tips, survey results, and best of(s) available on Pinterest and entertaining pictures from Orlando and April’s pop-up social on Instagram.

I am really excited that we are only a few days away from our Inside the Minds of In-House General Counsel event.  This dynamic evening program will assemble our members for a fast-paced Q&A that will dive into the minds of five in-house decision makers at well-known companies like Atlantic Tele-Network, MBTA, Acronis, Novartis, and MKS Instruments. It’s a program that not only will appeal to legal marketers, but also to the lawyers you work with on a daily basis. I encourage all of you to personally invite members of your firm to attend.  A big thank you to Joanne Thorud for assembling such a top-notch program!

Our inaugural issue of the Nor’easter also details two upcoming events I would like to personally note: 1) a free boot camp that will be hosted in July for members with less than 10 years of experience, something we will be offering for the first time; and 2) the early details for our popular regional conference, including the theme, location and date. For both of these events, our committees are working hard to bring attendees first class programming that will focus on different core areas that are critical to our professional experiences.

Finally, I would like to congratulate all of the winners from this year’s Your Honor Awards. Well done!

I look forward to seeing everyone this coming Thursday!

Cheers.

Chris

Brown Rudnick, One Financial Center, Boston

Join our panel for a quick-fire, direct conversation with in-house counsel as they share their first-hand experience with what gets attorneys hired, or fired. In-house general counsel handle a delicate balancing act in their challenging roles. Leveraging outside counsel relationships is an important contributor to their success. • Why do certain attorneys get hired?
  • How do firms and attorneys stand out among the competition to stay top of mind when new work is being handed out?
  • What causes in-house counsel to fire outside attorneys?
  • What marketing efforts matter, and which are simply noise?
  • Do surveys and rankings really impress in-house counsel?
  • What should outside counsel do to preserve precious relationships with in-house counsel, knowing that colleagues are competing to get a foot in the door?
  • How can marketing professionals help to maintain and strengthen in-house counsel relationships?

Panelists:

  • Kathleen F. Burke, Vice President and General Counsel, MKS Instruments

The Verdict is In – LMA International Hosts Another Successful Annual Conference

LMA New England was well represented last month at the LMA Annual Conference in Orlando with close to 30 members heading to sunny Florida.  Attendees had the chance to see the incrediably talented Kat Cole give a moving keynote speech about leadership, listen to a panel of influential general counsels profile the best ways to generate new business and maintain strong client relationships, and participate in more than 30 breakout sessions that covered the full gamut of marketing and business development areas.  And, of course, there were the networking events that brought new and verteran attendees together to share laughs, ideas and battlestories – the building blocks for developing those lifelong relationships that LMA seems to specialize in helping cultivate!

For in-depth conference recaps, please check out LMA New England member John McDougall’s blog. There are two wonderfully detailed posts about the educational programs, social events and random happenings that took place over the two days.

Many thanks to our sponsor Waldorf Astoria New York for hosting our joint Northeast Chapters event. The event was a terrific success!

Members Enjoy Local Humor as Comedian Tony V Helps Us Celebrate the Your Honor Awards

Our chapter held its 2013 Your Honor Awards to a crowd of nearly 100 people at the scenic Boston College Club at the end of March. The Oscar-like event, which was featured in the April 14th issue of Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly “People in Law,” was MCed by a well-known Boston comic, Tony V.

The local movie star and stand-up comedian awarded 16 different prizes covering nine different categories, all while keeping the audience laughing and entertained.  A special thank you to Katherine Scobbo, who planned this amazing event, and our volunteers, judges and in-kind sponsors, including Clockwork Design Group and Ed Malitsky. A full lineup of the winners in all categories, along with photos and video of the event, can be found on LMA New England’s website

Congratulations to Clockwork Design Group on Its 20th Anniversary

Hats off to Clockwork Design Group for celebrating its 20th anniversary last month.  The design firm, founded and led by longtime LMA New England member Vanessa Schaeffer, has been working closely with law firms of all sizes across the country to revamp, rebrand, and reinvorgorate their marketing efforts for two decades – quite the accomplishment in a such competitive marketplace!  Whether it’s building a colorful and interactive website, designing a playful advertising campaign or providing thought-provoking advice on marketing strategies, Clockwork has been at the forefront with transforming how law firms market themselves.  Our chapter and LMA International have been quite fortunate to partner with the Clockwork team on numerous projects throughout the years, including our recent rebranding of Nor’easter newsletter!  Without their constant support, our chapter would not be what it is today.  Congrats and thank you to everyone at Clockwork that has help make a difference with our chapter and law firms throughout the region.
